Illustrated Alphabet

I'm making my first illustrated alphabet. I had various themes in mind, I chose French nouns. Très simple. I may re-do some. It's a process.I was inspired to finally make one by Edward Gorey's mini book, The Eclectic Abecedarium. When I'm done, I might create a book... or stitch them together in a hanging quilt sort of thing. The trick is TO FINISH~ all 26 letters! I wonder if you, Dear Visitors, have a favorite letter picture in this group.
I have several, but I can't tell yet...

  1. Nie wiem co pisze przy literze "d", ale szkic jest zabawny. Pozostałe też mi się podobają i ciekawe kiedy dojdziesz do ostatniej litery alfabetu. Pozdrawiam.

  3. Okay Rita, this is just too damned cute for words. T stole my fave, the carrots caught my eye too! But they are all fun and whimsical. I might have to try doing something like this. What great watercolor practice for me. Hmmm.

P.S. I will send you a pic of my continuous line snail. My first continuous line drawing. Might be on to something for me since I struggle with drawing and am too critical of myself where that is concerned.

  4. Ooooo, RIta, I just love this. Not just the letters and the French nouns, but also the torn paper. It really adds to the whole look, especially in a group like that. Daniel is teaching in Southern France right now and I'm going to send him a link to this post. It's so much fun!! xoxo Silke

  7. Love love love these! And, as Silke says -- the torn paper adds to the charm. Hard to choose favorites, but I suppose a, f, and i -- trees and rivers always win me over instantly.

  9. I like them all -- there are a couple that jump out at me and make me smile -- the silly goat and the bright orange carrots. Your alphabet would make a great quilt. Keep us posted on the entry's as you meander along. -- barbara

  11. It's funny how something can inspire you..after reading your post yesterday..your alphabet and the paintings reminded me all of a sudden of my favorite book as a child.. Mon Grand Dictionnaire Anglais -Français..I was 6 I think..it was big and red and had illustrations..I loved to read and spell..and all of a sudden yesterday I missed that book..and thought of Max our 6 yr old..last night I found it twice:) On Ebay and On Amazon.ca French..resellers..
I have ordered it..I'll have the feeling again..and Max will have the pleasure..and truly it's because of your art and post.
    Thank you.
    I only bought one..Amazon..as Ebay I had to ask a question..and didn't have a response;)

  12. I like them all but am drawn to carrots and island. Carrots remind me of my dog Teddy who loved carrots especially from one shop. The island reminds me of northern Minnesota and a place I went as a small child.

  13. I love these -- so sweet! My favorites are the carrots & the clock! I have a Tasha Tudor alphabet book circa 1955 that my great Aunt Isabel gave me. I keep it in my book cupboard.

  16. Wspaniale! Jako dziecko uwielbiałam ksiażkę Abecadło Krakowskie, której ilustratorem był Jan Marcin Szancer, znany polski artysta.

  18. I love them all, Rita. With our exchanges about alphabet books through the years, I think this is a natural thing for you to write and paint.
