Several weeks ago,I had the brillant idea of going for a walk rather than staying stuck in a stressed mood, indoors. As soon as I stepped out the front door the change, in the morning scenery as well as in my soul, was as intense as if I'd traveled to another country! I took no sketchbook, no camera, & I walked & gazed slowly, taking comfort in sunlit October trees.
I made memory sketches when I returned. Even though I resisted (drawing from memory feels so insecure), it was pleasant. I felt as if I were still out there. And my memory of that morning is still vivid as I contemplate the sketches today. We had a Northeaster storm (big, heavy, windy snow) on Sunday, & a lot of the leaves I saw are gone, & a lot of limbs & even some trunks are broken. Images pass quickly in autumn, though not usually as fast as they are doing this year.
Such a colorful diaritical (a new word?) expression here. Good journaling anyway.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful idea, as well as a beautiful sketch! I heard a little factoid somewhere recently that said that we remember scenes and events better when we aren't snapping pictures of them. Something like that. I guess that just means real life is best viewed through our own eyes rather than the lens of a camera!
ReplyDeleteWow..from memory!
ReplyDeleteSo talented..
For some reason Rita..I cannot picture you stressed.
Sounds like your walk was good for the soul. Being fully a part of the natural world can be so rejuvenating
ReplyDeleteI love what you captured, esp because the storm changed the scene(s) so much, I'm sure. And I feel the same way about those outdoor 'pauses'--why don't I do them more often? They are so refreshing and inspiring . . .
ReplyDeleteGood memories!
ReplyDeleteI like this way to gather (to hoarder?..) memories ! I'd like to be able to do that , it seems to me that it makes you closer to things than using a camera ..
ReplyDeleteGlad to be back !A bientôt !
Such pretty trees. I'm glad you found your walk stress relieving, too. Just getting outside and away from our normal work is so good for our spirits and our creativity!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post! The best antidote for a stressed mood is to get out among nature's gifts. One gift that I always appreciate from mother nature are all the different beautiful trees, especially in the fall of the year. Your sketch is, to me, soft and flowing yet exhibits strength. You are so creative at what you do! -- barbara
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you stopped by, your art is beautiful-I'll need to come back and check out your older posts. Walking camera-less is what I do when I'm upset or befuddled- it would be fabulous to be able to draw/paint what I saw afterwards...:-)
ReplyDeleteWell Rita, I think you got out just in time. How wonderful you created from your memories of your beautiful walk. ( :
ReplyDeleteI'm constantly impressed by the lovely fresh feeling in your work. And your sentiments are so appropriate. Getting outside can be such a balm for each of us.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely post. Amazing how being outdoors and taking time to look around and "look-up" puts things into perspective. Seems to me like you made some very wonderful memories. So glad you shared them. Have a great day Rita!
ReplyDeleteA new follower of your sketching blog and I am enchanted. Any particular favorite pen and ink? Draftsman pens in very fine? Just learning this art as it definitely takes my indoor stress away. Thanks for sharing your talent!
ReplyDeleteFound your blog and I absolutely love your work.
