Sketching in Line

Sketching while waiting in line at the grocery store.
You whip out your small (inconspicuous) 4 X 6 book,
your pen, & in seconds you go from being bored
to being interested, sometimes even disappointed
that the line has moved along!
You have your book handy. You reach for it fast.
A friend says,
"Rita, you have the fastest sketchbook in the West!"
Quick unfinished sketches are fine. Spontaneous!
(I added a bit of color at home,
from color notes I'd made.)
My small Art Learning Book now doubles for a
On-the-Scene sketch book,
because I carry it with me at all times.
(on the right: notes about Richard Diebenkorn's drawings.)
We are a One-Car-Wash Town. My car stayed dirty
because I avoided the long lines.
Now, my car is clean because: I Sketch!

PS New feature: I have added responses to the notes
on the previous post. A new part of blogging for me.
Will continue to do so...

    1. In line, I don't think anyone notices. On subways, a bit more so. But people are caught up in their own thoughts, devices, etc. The little sketchbooks, they are like making any kind of notes...

    1. Yeah, literally, carrying a little thing, a 4 X 6, can make a big difference in turning things around!

  4. Dear brattcat,
I am learning to live in the frame of mind that No sketches are awful, because they are only a reflection of our process. However, practicing something does make progress in how things look too!

  5. Ah Rita - you do have the fastest sketch book in the west. Such energy I feel too in these lovely sketches. You are inspiring me friend to do more "in line" sketching. Glad to read your car is now clean :)! Have a great week. Thanks too for your lovely comments and visits to my blog. They mean so much. Hugs!

    1. Yes, the bonuses, like a clean car, LOL!
Sketching while waiting is a fun way to observe and remember what is around us, even in a very short time...
On the other hand, the way you set up your drawing in the field for a longer drawing/painting, that is a lovely way to observe...

  7. A great way to pass the time while waiting. I usually read, but should really practice sketching at least some of the time.

  8. I really love your art learning books. The sketches have a lot of energy to them and real personality. I can almost imagine -- in fact, not even almost, I DO imagine -- what these people are like, how they speak and walk and what they put in their carts! I love it!
