There were so many styles that
I made notes. It was helpful, if not obsessive.
(Here, only a snippet of several pages.)
This wasn't the 1st time. Some years ago, I had drawn a
bunch of bags, & eventually cut some of them out
to save in one of my "repository", catch-all journals.
In 2011, at a city Farmer's Market,
I devoted a page in my small sketch journal
to various shoppers' bags. Fascinating variety!
An interesting book : Blackstock's Collections.
He draws collections at a very intense & obsessive level.
Also interesting:
Lists, To-Do's: Illustrated Inventories
Collected Thoughts & Other Artists' Enumerations

Collecting quantities verses buying one of something
has an economic tie-in in our consumer culture.
Folks on YouTube show & tell us that they have not one,
but a multitude of
bags, notebooks, pens, shoes, etc.
& they encourage us to buy more, more more.
(They are often given these things at no charge
or at a discount. Or, it is their profession.)
What does the average person do who can't afford
or doesn't need too many of an item?
Me: I admit, sometimes I buy more than one...
But drawing is more affordable.

What would YOU choose to draw (or buy)
if you had to have a collection of 100?
The mugs sketch is my favorite..mostly cuz of the colors and happy feeling I get from looking at them..Not sure if i would choose to draw 100 of anything..maybe hearts???? I certainly do NOT need to buy 100 of anything...
ReplyDeleteYou amaze me Rita! Clever and colorful!!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your cups and mugs. It's so darned happy. I think drawing multiples is a great way to get comfy with a shape or form -- both the sameness of it and the difference. Vivian Swift did that a fair amount in something. Maybe in Le Road Trip or maybe on her blog back when she was doing more painting. I'm always fascinated by series like this. What would I draw... 100 books? 100 pieces of fruit?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your catch-up on Marmelade Gypsy. Excited you got a new bookcase. That's always needed around here! I'll be doing a longer post about that photo of the 4th great grand. I dug up info that was fascinating! And what am I making Rick? Every year I make him a book of badly-written poetry about key events of our year. This year I'm adding lots of photos. Sometimes I paint it or make the book but this year I'm behind in starting!
Love your bags etc..et al:):): Et al..:)
ReplyDeleteInstagram is the worst for consumerism..the worst evah.
Trust me..
Buy this,buy that..swipe up..oh lala..yet I am an IGer.
That lists book♥
Ginny, Thanks for going over to that other post! Glad you like the whimsey! R.
ReplyDeleteNana, The consumerism is a mixed blessing for me. I am grateful for material comforts and pleasures it has brought me, but it seems to have gone to such an extreme. I do get pulled into those videos in spite of myself. I hear Instagram is great for artists' sites, but I'm not on it...
ReplyDeleteJeanie, Good point about drawing multiples! Also, if one is enventing them, like the teacups, it's a good exercise for the imagination. Cool gift for Rick, he's a lucky guy! I always enjoy visiting your blog! Rita
ReplyDeleteRita this is the perfect way to collect without collecting...love your bags as well as your mugs. The older I get the less things I want but I do enjoy looking at other's collections. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful journal pages...you always inspire me with your art work friend. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteHello, I love the sketches of the bags and cups. This is a great way to collect! Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy week ahead!
ReplyDeleteYour sketches are wonderful! That is a great way to collect things without taking up huge space in your cupboards. I sometimes "collect" a photo instead of an object as well. The photos are stored on the computer so they don't take up any space at all.

Hi Rita! A quick reply to your comments on Marmelade Gypsy! I have "The Library Book " in my stack -- I got it at Christmas but haven't read it yet. Glad you liked it -- good motivation. You also asked about graphic novels. I've tried. But I just can't get into them the way I can into a book. I think it's because how the text jumps picture to picture or panel to panel vs. the whole thought and I lose the context of reading. I like illustrations in books but in the way that they were used in Winnie the Pooh or Alice! That said, if they get people to pick up a book and read, then go for it! That's sort of how I feel about audio, since I don't travel that much. It breaks my train of thought. But in a car on a long road trip, especially by yourself? You can't beat it! I didn't know you had been a bookseller and children's librarian! That's VERY cool. Thanks for the recommendations on the children's books. I'm always looking for good ones for the Toddler Twosome and suspect I will be long after they graduate from Toddlerhood!
ReplyDeleteLove your mugs and bags. I'm going to look for those books, too. (And speaking of books--that's probably what I'd choose for collecting 100 of! Of course, in reality, I have FAR more than 100 books...)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was first starting to sketch, one exercise I did was sketch the same mug every day for a stretch (can't remember now if it was a week or a month!). It was fun sketching it from all angles, and seeing the progress of my sketching.
