Sketching at the Local Greenhouse

The staff, the airy greenhouse & the plants
welcomed us Sketchers
to the Aubuchon Hardware Store & Nursery.
I asked the worker above if we would be in the way.
"No problem," she said.
"If you get in the way, we'll just water you.
It was an idyllic spot of light, color, and happy people.
(Except for the flies, the little black flies.)
Local professional gardener Kate pulled up in her truck.
I'm in awe of her, her artistic talents, her knowledge,
& her strength. In the old days of my childhood
only men had trucks & tools like this!
You could spend days sketching individual plants!
After our greenhouse visit we went for lunch
at the local café & diner. There we discussed
our sketching experience & other matters of interest.

  3. I enjoy reading your blog so much, and taking a peek at your journal entries. Before my vision loss worsened I kept a daily journal very much like yours, it was wonderful to relive the day and go back months or years later. I miss being able to do this, I enjoy your work so much, I might not be able to physically do it now but I enjoy yours!

  6. Can you tell me please, what kind of pen you are using? I LOVE your linework ... thanks!

  7. Lin, In these I used a Micron 01 and 05. The Paperblanks paper needed a light line. In other sketches I use a Staple pen called Duramark ultra fine , it's got a medium line and is waterproof. Lately I'm sketching a lot with a LAMY fountain pen, Fine nib. I can add waterproof ink which requires extra care and cleaning of the pen, but which can be used with watercolors.
The lightweight paper here had a problem with watercolor so I had to use a light touch. And you? what tools do you use? Thanks for visiting, I enjoy our exchanges.

    1. Many thx Rita! I use microns too...i admire ur light touch...my lines tend to be heavy despite the small nib. My Lami skips terribly...tried to clean and clean it...but got too frustrated...back to microns. Sometimes i use an ulta fine Sharpie pen...im using a Kilimanjaro spiral travel journal by Cheap Joes 140 CP watercolor paper...cheaper than Arches...my first love. Kilimanjaro travel journals come in 2 sizes...i use the smaller...5.5 x 8.5 inches. Thx again!

  8. Lots of beautiful paintings!! They are so loose and joyful.
Thanks for the lovely words over on my blog! I'm so glad you are inspired by the drawings of the ASARO Head. It's a head/model that emphasizes the PLANES of the head on one side while the other is more curved. It's helpful! Lots of pics of it online that you can draw from. Happy Painting!

  11. Rita what wonderful sketches. I think a greenhouse would be the perfect spot to spend time sketching. Your truck drawing with the brooms was delightful. So glad you are sharing. Your black flies must be similar to our June flies...they are triangular and really bite hard. Certainly pesky creatures.

  13. I love every single one of these. They are so happy. And I so needed happy today. Life going from bad to worse. These just flow with energy and life (that's in short supply here, too) and a joy and happiness that makes my heart burst. Still dry?
